So… a few weeks ago I found out that I’m about to become an expat! In just nine short weeks I’m going to be living in Papua New Guinea on an expat assignment with my company. And I couldn’t be more excited.

It’s a little overwhelming to be moving to a country I’ve actually never even visited – so this weekend I’ll be heading there for a few days to check it out, meet some of my new colleagues and start to get used to the humidity.

It’s also very overwhelming thinking about all the things we have to do in the next nine weeks – get visas and work permits, sell pretty much everything in our house, get medicals / vaccinations / malaria pills, fix up things we’ve been meaning to fix in our house, sell Matt’s car, learn about the country, and, most importantly – have a going away party! And in the middle of all this we’re still going on our planned three weeks to Thailand and Cambodia. Phew!

Plans for the next few years that I’ll be living there are learning Tok Pisin (one of the official languages of the country – but there are actually over 800 languages spoken!), learning how to scuba dive (PNG has some of the world’s best dive sites apparently), travelling around PNG as much as I can, and visiting other countries in the South Pacific. Oh, and I guess I should do some work as well… πŸ˜‰

I know it’s going to be hard. It will be a very different life, I’ll be working a lot, I won’t be able to do many of the things that I take for granted here (including being able to walk around).

But despite all that, I can’t wait. It’s going to be an exciting few years and I’m sure there will be many a tale for my blog!
